“I was inspired by the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, where he’s sick, he makes this call where he plays back puking sounds from his keyboard,” says Tobias Weyand. “Bueller inserts this diskette into his keyboard and pretends to be really sick, I’ve always wanted a thing like that.” Weyand’s a Nintendo DS homebrew game developer.
I wrote an editorial last week about how much I’m enjoying Pokemon again even though I’m not exactly in its target age group anymore, I’m 21. I’ve played a lot of Soul Silver over the last two weeks or so and a number of the game’s features got me thinking. I realize Pokemon hasn’t changed that much in the last 10 years and unlike most franchises it hasn’t needed to. Most people play Pokemon because it is a familiar experience and if anything substantial were changed about the franchise it really would not be a Pokemon game anymore. Here are my thoughts and reactions to Nintendo’s latest press conference, enjoy them in all their greatness. This is how a regular gamer reacts.
According to a Nintendo press release the latest installments of Gamefreak’s successful Pokemon franchise are set to drop in North America and Europe in spring 2011. Of course the lucky Japanese will have the game much earlier, rumour has it the game has a September 2010 release date in Japan.
Nintendo has had a long and well documented fight against video game piracy.
Nintendo’s newest iteration of the popular DS handheld game system, the DSi XL, has a lot to offer in terms of expanding the casual gaming market. Released just over a month ago in North America to mostly positive reviews, the DSi XL features a screen that is 93% larger than it’s predecessors. Though I have never felt the need for a larger sized screen, this innovation will admittedly provide a far better gaming experience for anyone with poor eyesight. Nintendo has been having a problem with piracy lately and unfortunately for them it’s not the awesome swashbuckling kind.
I loved Scribblenauts. It was truly one of the coolest games of 2009. However it was plagued by a bunch of technical problems, mainly controlling the main character. The taping control mechanic really didn’t work the way the developers intended.
