Could this in-game hack ruin Halo: Reach’s online gameplay? A user on Game-Tuts.com has managed to give himself 2137504256 credits to purchase items in the armory.
The armor in this screen shot looks ridiculously awesome, way cooler than what was available in the beta. Also note the skull image over the glass on the helmet.
I’m not very hacker literate, but I gather from the discussion on the Game-Tut that this hack is legit and that it could be recreated when the game actually gets released. This really isn’t a Modern Warfare 2 style game ruiner as it’s a hack that gives you credits to buy in-game armour, but it makes me wonder what will come next.
If before the game is even out, hackers can alter it, what will it be like when it is finally released?
Update: A reader has informed us that in order to use hacks like this you need a JTAG console. These special modified consoles are easily detectable by both Bungie and Xbox Live.

amazing
This has not been patched and is now even easier if you look on youtube, but It can only be used offline, and now you don’t need a JTAG console.
@Jason
He’s maxed out his rank here too. Says so in the bottom right of the screenshot. I don’t see things like the extra armour being hackable unless they aren’t downloaded. If they are already on the disc however, I’d imagine it could show up, but not without someone at M$ or Bungie throwing down the Banhammer.
Because the Halo: Reach leak has only been possible for modders with JTAG consoles to by pass Xbox LIVE security – it’s a certainty that the hack mentioned here was done by changing variables within the game code itself.
Remember in the Reach beta to upgrade you not only had to have the credits, but be at certain ranks? – well I think it’s unlikely this hack will spill onto LIVE when the retail version is released.
It better not be possible for the Flaming Armor effect to be modded on, if I have paid for the Legendary Edition and everyone is running around with it – I won’t be pleased…!
@Jason
I didn’t realize the JTAG thing, I’ve added an update to the main story though. Thanks,
I’m hoping it’ll get patched, I don’t even know if this could possibly become a widespread issue but from what I understand hacking pretty much ruined MW2.
ya hacking did ruin mw2 but keep it on reach
Hopefully patched.
I imagine the security might be a little behind with this copy. Every game these days seems to come with a day one patch that fixes up little bits of code. Perhaps this will be one of the first things to get worked out?
Armour’s looking schweet though. Can’t wait to see what other stuff will be in the armoury.
