April 19, 2005: Over 1500 people attend the opening night reception of ‘I am 8 bit’, an annual group exhibit showcasing video game inspired art in all mediums imaginable. One of the most notable pieces in the show’s history was by artist Jason Torchinsky, who created a fully functional 6 foot tall, two hundred pound Atari 2600 controller which was exhibited in 2007.
The brainchild of tech/game writer Jon M. Gibson, ‘I am 8 bit’ is now a full-fledged lifestyle brand dedicated to retro gaming. Through various partnerships, ‘I am 8 bit’ has produced an array of merchandise from vinyl decals of space invaders to limited edition t-shirts and guitar hero guitar straps, as well as releasing an immensely popular book.
