(SPOILERS: for those who haven’t played the Uncharted series.)
You might not know it, but there is more than one Drake dominating popular media today. Drake Aubrey Graham is a huge Canadian actor-turned-rapper, and Nathan Drake is a sarcastic yet lovable treasure hunter and action hero. In what possible way are these two at all connected? Well, they’re not, but they share many common interests and (we think) they would get along fabulously. Assuming the Jimmy from Degrassi doesn’t mind the handguns that Nathan from Uncharted brandishes on a daily basis.
And so, to compare the two great Drakes we present the following and ask you, dear reader, which Drake is inspiring the other? More importantly, which Drake is the greatest Drake of all?
1. Drizzy got that money and (somehow) Nathan does too.
It’s pretty clear that Drizzy Drake has money. He relishes that fact on his two albums and makes sure people know he’s a big deal with money. But how does Nathan afford his adventures and the luxury he lives in when not plundering antiquities? We see him all over the world, often staying in lavish environments. Perhaps he has something bringing income in on the side? In the games we see that almost any treasure he and Sully find inevitably gets buried or destroyed like at the end of Steven Spielberg’s The Goonies. Maybe, contrary to Drizzy, Nathan’s girls Elena and Chloe are paying for his hotel rooms? Probably not, but Nathan Drake just may be charming enough to pull something like that off, which brings us to number two.
2. Hey Ladies
The Drake’s just can’t get away from the ladies, can they? If Drizzy Drake is singing about having sex 4 times this week and being ashamed about it, what does that mean Nathan is doing? Although getting laid is less implicitly implied in the games, it’s still pretty apparent that Nathan isn’t exactly missing out on another for of action. The cat-and-mouse game with Elena just adds to the dramatic tension – although I’m more personally inclined towards Chloe.
3. Adventures overseas
Drake may have enough money for private chartered flights around the world, but Nathan has other means of travel. Sure, it’s more likely to be a giant cargo plane landing in the desert than a personal jet with champagne and a fireplace, but he still gets the job done. He might even blow the thing up since he wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place, but he doesn’t mind – he shoots his way out.
4. That’s not your real name, is it?
Drake played Jimmy on Degrassi: The Next Generation and his real name is Aubrey Graham. Is Nathan Drake of Uncharted fame Drake’s real name? (I realize this is getting confusing) Marlowe, the villain of Uncharted 3 reveals that Nathan was at an orphanage and says, “that’s not your real name.” So what is Nathan’s real name? Could the “Nathan” part be true but the Drake part fabricated?
Ya, we realize this comparison is a bit sily, but it’s definitely something to think about since they have a lot of similarities beyond their moniker. (If you wanted to throw in “The Drake” from Seinfeld we could, but that might be stretching it.)
So who, in your mind, is the greatest Drake of all?
